Origin and Establishment

The Department of Law was established based on the decision of the Higher Education Council in its 49th session held on 02/04/1429 AH, under decision number 24/49/1429 AH. This decision was approved by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques through the royal directive No. (5150/MB) dated 03/07/1429 AH, which included approval for the establishment of a specialized law department as one of the academic departments within the College of Administrative and Financial Sciences (College of Business). The Bachelor of Law program admitted its first cohort in the year 1433 AH, initially for male students only.

As the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia moves forward under Vision 2030, implementing successive developments in political, economic, social, and knowledge-based fields, as well as in Arab, regional, and international relations, there is no doubt that this necessitates parallel advancements in legislative and judicial aspects. Achieving this requires the preparation of highly qualified legal professionals through distinguished academic training, contributing to meeting the Kingdom’s needs in these areas.

The objective is not limited to preparing qualified individuals to join legal professions and perform related tasks but extends to enriching and developing legal knowledge in accordance with contemporary requirements, new relationships, and emerging concepts. The focus has shifted beyond merely transferring knowledge and experiences and spreading legal culture to include the necessity of academic and scientific research.

Consequently, the Universities Affairs Council issued decision No. (2/16/45), approving a comprehensive academic restructuring for 24 universities governed by the Higher Education Council and Universities System, issued by Royal Decree No. (M/8) dated 04/06/1414 AH. The restructuring plan for each university was attached to the decision and communicated to the universities through a circular from the Secretary-General of the Universities Affairs Council No. (4500305258) dated 12/03/1445 AH. As part of this restructuring, King Khalid University’s Department of Law within the College of Business was transformed into a standalone College of Law, comprising two academic departments: the Department of Private Law and the Department of Public Law.
